Vertical Wood Slat Stair Screen

A floor-to-ceiling vertical slat screen that replaces a half wall at the base of a basement staircase.

The problem

A drywall half wall that made the stairs feel like a tunnel and blocked light into the lower level.

What Luke did

Luke removed the half wall and built a screen of evenly spaced vertical slats anchored top and bottom, with the same species carried onto the stair skirt. Light and sightlines pass through, and the stair is still guarded.

The result

The basement reads as part of the house instead of a separate floor.
